Local mum starts career in paediatric care
Published: 31 Aug 2020
Cara Galea wanted to start a new career in paediatric care, a natural step from her time as a stay at home mum. Now she is graduating with a Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy) (HLT43015) from the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) and starting her dream job.
Cara was looking for a career where she could care for others, especially children. "I was interested in working in paediatric occupational therapy and there were courses in Allied Health being offered at CIT." Cara said.
"I found the flexibility offered at ɬÀï·¬to be really helpful and the teachers were great. ɬÀï·¬were great at fitting around me and my needs."
As part of her studies, Cara was placed with House on the Hill Paediatric Occupational Therapy. "My first placement was in adult physiotherapy, but I definitely had more interest in paediatrics."
After her placement Cara was offered employment as an Allied Health Assistant (AHA) and couldn't be happier with this result. Sammi Woods, Senior Occupational Therapist and Practice Owner at House on the Hill, said Cara had been a perfect fit.
This is the second CIT-trained Allied Heath Assistant to work with House on the Hill. "Both have fitted in well with the work and team. When Cara started her placement, it was like she had worked here forever," Sammi said.
"Cara is really supportive with the children and she goes above and beyond for them. She is a natural with the children and has the initiative and motivation we are looking for."
Having now had two placements with CIT, Sammi found the process to be simple and easy, with great results for her business. "Working with ɬÀï·¬was very straightforward, and the support was there for the students. We have been very happy with both placements."
Sammi noted AHAs have become an integral asset for her business, as they provide such a range on important skills and support. "Without AHAs it would be hard for us to provide the comprehensive service we currently offer."
