ɬÀï·¬Diploma of Hospitality (SIT50416) and Diploma of Event Management (SIT50316) students have hosted their first face-to-face events since the COVID-19 pandemic as part of their studies, raising over $15,000 for local charities.
Four charity events were run by ɬÀï·¬students, including the Canberra Wine Appreciation Dinner for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, the Oktoberfest event for Canteen, A Day at the Races for Pegasus and the Bloom health and wellness event for Qendo.
Hospitality, Culinary and Tourism teacher, Candace Safi, said her students adjusted well to the changed environment of event management. "These were the first face-to-face events we were able to host since this time last year, so it is very exciting."
"Our students had to adhere to COVID restrictions in place by the Department of Health and also venue COVID Safety Plans which vary slightly depending on the venue," Candace said.
These changes mean reduced venue capacities, different room layouts and different food service procedures. Candace said her students have embraced the challenges that COVID has presented, including reduced venue capacities changes to room layouts and food service. "Our students will walk away with many new skills and a sense of pride after completing their event."
Event Management student Olivia Smith organised 'Bloom', a health and wellness event with yoga and aromatherapy sessions, and a tasty brunch with mocktails. "We raised money for QENDO, a charity that supports people affected by endometriosis, PCOS, infertility, and other pelvic pain related problems."
"I've really enjoyed learning about seeking sponsorship for our event, and the challenge that came with starting with no budget. I've learnt there are so many supportive and generous businesses around Canberra willing to help."
Olivia said the support she received from ɬÀï·¬teachers was amazing. "Teachers give us the tools we need to be able to plan the event and then trust us to take the next step."
