Foundation Skills

Prepare for further study, improve your employment opportunities and refresh your existing skills with CIT's range of certificates in general education for adults or skills for work and vocational pathways.

What are foundation skills?

Foundation skills are the essential skills that people need to be able to participate in the community, education or training and the workplace. They include a combination of language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy (LLND) as well as employability skills.

Who should consider studying foundation skills?

  • people exploring training options
  • people returning to work or study after an extended absence
  • people who want to build their confidence to improve job opportunities
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
  • people wanting to improve their reading, writing and maths
  • Skills for work and vocational pathways (Accredited Statement of Attainment)
    • Build your language, numeracy, digital (LLND) and learning skills to participate more fully in everyday life, further learning, and work.

      You will develop skills to transition into vocational courses, senior secondary study, and/or pre- apprenticeships/apprenticeships.

      These Statement of Attainments are designed to support students seeking entrance into a specific qualification but need to level up their skills in the necessary language, literacy, or numeracy skill levels for entry requirements. The course also supports students wanting to build their skills and confidence whilst they explore work and/or study options. The Statement of Attainments can be used as a pathway to the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways FSK20119 and with completing them may be eligible to receive recognition towards other qualifications.

      Note: Students who apply for any of the Skills for work and vocational pathways Statement of Attainments will be required to complete a short skills evaluation and attend an interview before they can enrol into classes.

      Students who need additional study support can register with ɬÀï·¬Student Support before they apply.
  • Practical skills for work and learning (non-accredited)
    • Develop your employability skills and explore vocational options. This course will give you the understanding, knowledge and confidence you need to be current in the workplace and/ or engage in further vocational education. You will learn essential workplace skills such as communication, numeracy, and digital literacy, to be effective and confident in any professional environment.

      You will also learn about study skills and developing a pathway to employment or further vocational training. This course is suitable for anyone who is returning to the workforce, study, refresh their LLND or looking for a career change.

      The Math and Writing fundamental courses are designed to support students working to overcome struggles with reading, writing and numeracy needed for everyday life. Students are supported to develop basic skills from decoding and spelling words to writing and reading with greater fluency. These courses are delivered in a very small classes to provide one on one support in a safe and judgment free learning environment.

      Basic computer skills is designed to develop confidence and understanding of computing basics including navigating the internet safely, managing files and an introduction to Microsoft 365 applications including word, outlook and one drive.
